Insurance for foreigners is more than a formality. Check what help you will receive
When coming to Poland, whether for tourism, work or education, every non-EU foreigner must have medical expenses covered in Poland. This is also a condition when applying for a national visa or Residence Card. Colonnade’s insurance for foreigners meets the criteria required by law, but just as importantly, it provides real, wide-ranging health care assistance to any newcomer. Find out how to choose the best cover.
What benefits does the policy provide for a foreign national in Poland or in the Schengen Area?
Health insurance for foreigners is dedicated to people from extra-EU countries who are not covered by free medical assistance. It provides coverage or reimbursement of medical expenses in the event of a sudden illness or accident, both in Poland and the Schengen Area.
An accident or illness can happen at any place and time, so the policy gives a foreigner staying in Poland a sense of security. This insurance primarily covers:
- medical transport, transport to the country of origin and transport of the deceased
- providing necessary medical assistance in the event of illness, including dental assistance in the event of acute pain, doctor’s on-site calls
outpatient treatments and examinations - hospitalisation and surgery
- in the event of contracting COVID-19, the insurer organizes and covers transport costs, hospital stay and treatment up to 100% of the insured amount
- providing immediate pregnancy-related medical assistance – up to week 32 of pregnancy
- purchasing medicines, dressings, infusion fluids and orthopaedic aids
- 24-hour telephone assistance centre
- medical advice and referrals, information on doctors and hospitals, scheduling medical appointments, arranging hospital admissions, information on vaccinations.
The benefits have been selected to provide full health protection during a stay in the Schengen countries, including Poland. You can choose between three sums insured:
- EUR 10,000
- EUR 30,000
- EUR,60 000
Depending on your needs, you can choose from six packages and a term of cover ranging from 30 days to 365 days. This is particularly important when applying for a visa or Residence Card, as the policy must meet certain legal requirements in each case.
The premium depends on the package you choose and the term of cover, starting even from PLN 0.86 per day.

How do I notify a loss and get help?
Coverage is provided by Canada’s largest insurer, Colonnade SA, which guarantees a safe and efficient claim settlement. All you need to do is contact the Assistance Centre – you can call us at +48 22 203 75 04. The Assistance Centre settles costs with hospitals through direct invoicing, so that the insured does not have to pay with their own money.
TU Colonnade arranges assistance or reimbursement of costs incurred, provides visa advice and advice on loss of luggage, passport, documents or tickets during a stay in the Republic of Poland or in the Schengen countries.
The helpline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Assistance is organised both when the situation does not require immediate action on your own and when, for reasons beyond your control, the Assistance Centre cannot be contacted before action is taken. In this case, the insurer will pay the costs incurred by the insured on the basis of submitted receipts. Thanks to the cashless settlement with the medical centres to which the insured will be referred, there is no need to pay for medical care with your own cash.
When notifying a claim, you must provide details that will help verify the insured’s identity:
- policy number
- first and last name, possibly passport number
- insured’s telephone number, if a third contacts us on the insured’s behalf
Which insurance should I choose for my visa and Residence Card?
Persons applying for a national visa or a Schengen visa at Polish consular offices must complement their application with an attached document proving that they hold a health insurance policy in Poland or a travel medical insurance policy that covers a minimum sum of EUR 30,000. The insurance term must cover the entire period of the planned stay. For them, we have prepared two packages:
- a basic package covering only medical costs; and
- an extended package, which also includes personal accident (Accident and Health) and third-party liability (TPL) insurance.
Foreigners applying for a Residence Card in Poland must file an application for a residence permit with the voivode in charge of their place of stay, and attach a document of health insurance valid in Poland or a confirmation of coverage of the costs of treatment in the Republic of Poland by their insurer. The minimum amount of insurance is EUR 30,000. There are two packages available for this amount, a basic one and an extended one; the latter covers personal accident and third party-liability.
The additional extensions, i.e. personal accident and third-party liability, provide even more comprehensive cover during your stay in the Schengen countries. While the medical insurance provides cover for medical expenses, the accident insurance pays out compensation in the event of damage to health as a result of a personal accident. The insured’s family will also receive compensation if the accident results in the insured’s death, in an amount of up to EUR 10,000.
During your stay, accidents involving damage to a third party or their property, such as rented accommodation, may also take place. Third-party liability insurance, which covers damage up to EUR 10,000, provides cover against out-of-pocket expenses.
Additional extensions are optional for any sum insured, including the highest sum insured, i.e. in the EUR 60,000 package..
